System requirements
You take PCAT in your browser. Before the test starts, an environment check confirms the following.
What you need
Microphone (required)
The Speaking section records your voice, so you need a working microphone. Either a built-in or an external microphone is fine. You cannot take the test on a device without one.
Speakers or headphones (required)
The Listening section plays audio. The environment check plays a test sound and asks you to confirm that you heard it.
Camera (optional)
A camera is optional and you can take the test with it off. If you turn it on, video of the session is recorded and your score report notes that a camera was used.
Supported browser
You need an up-to-date browser that supports audio recording. The environment check tests your browser and tells you before the test starts if it is not supported.
The list of supported browsers and minimum versions will be published once confirmed.
Internet connection
A stable internet connection is needed to play audio and upload your recordings. The environment check confirms that you are online.
A recommended connection speed will be published once confirmed.
The environment check
Before you start, the test checks your camera, microphone, speakers, browser and network connection in turn. For the microphone it confirms not only that permission was granted but that sound is actually being picked up. Anything wrong is reported at that point.
How long it takes
Each section has its own time limit. A section's clock starts when you begin it — not while you are reading the instructions or working through the sample question.

Add the environment check and the per-section instructions and sample questions on top of that. Allow about 45 minutes in total.
If your connection drops
You can resume from your dashboard within 24 hours of the interruption. Resuming does not cost an additional credit.
